HCL Tech bags $500-m Merck deal

05 May 2010 Evaluate

HCL Technologies has bagged a $500-million contract from pharmaceutical giant Merck and Co. The deal, spread over five years, will see HCL becoming business and technology services partner to Merck by providing services such as software-led IT solutions, Remote Infrastructure Management (RIM), engineering and back office services. The revenue from the contract will start kicking-in from the current quarter.

As part of the order, Merck will leverage HCL's near-shore delivery network in the US comprising an operations centre in Raleigh, North Carolina and its global data centre delivery ecosystem, supported by global partner footprints. HCL plans to expand its team in North Carolina, relying on local hires to staff projects. In all, HCL will deliver services from 20 worldwide locations including the US, Poland, China and Brazil.

The mandate extends HCL's existing relationship with Merck dating back to 2004. Further, in December 2007, HCL had announced a multi-year deal with Merck to provide strategic support to the latter's key IT initiatives (the deal was then valued at $150 million).
