ACC wants to sell cement at Rs 300 per bag

01 Apr 2009 Evaluate

India’s largest cement maker by capacity, ACC Ltd has said that cement should be sold at Rs 300 per bag in the retail market if it needs to progress with its expansion plans for 2010. This is the first instance that any cement company in India has called for such a large increase in prices. Today, the average price per bag is Rs 250 per 50 kg bag on all-India basis.

According to Sumit Banerjee, managing director of ACC, the net realisation for companies is much lower after taking into consideration VAT, excise duty, dealer margins and logistics expenses.

He added that cement demand will continue to grow by 7-9% in 2009. ACC, in February, sold 1.75 million tonnes, a 4% increase from that of last year. ACC’s new clinker project and a cement line of 3 million tonne capacity at Chanda in Maharashtra are underway. These will be completed by the middle of next year. This will increase ACC’s total capacity to 30.5 million tonnes from the current 22.6 million tonnes. Swiss-based Holcim, the world’s second largest cement manufacturer, has 46% stake in ACC.

Cement stocks have had a good run up over the last few weeks in line with increasing cement demand. The outlook for the April-June quarter is expected to be better than what it was a year ago.
