Greaves Cotton plans expansion in diesel engine space

Greaves Cotton, the country’s largest small engine supplier to the three wheeler space is planning to expand into making small diesel engines for the fast growing passenger car space and bigger diesel engines for light, medium and heavy duty trucks in the country due to Rs 25 difference between petrol and diesel fuel.

Further, the company is also eyeing bigger contracts in sub-one tonne trucks and plans to extend further into bigger light, medium and heavy trucks engines as well. It has a wide portfolio of water cooled and air cooled engines ranging from 300 to 500 cc and it recently expanded its range by adding a 900 cc twin cylinder diesel engine and water cooled 265 cc petrol engines for the three wheeler space.

The company employs over 70-80 people working on automotive engine R&D and has engaged global engine development specialist Ricardo for some of its work. The Greaves engine is a basic engine that is tweaked to the needs of the customers.

Greaves Cotton (GCL) is a well-diversified engineering company. The company is engaged in manufacturing of diesel and petrol engines, gensets, agro equipments and construction equipments. The company owns six manufacturing units located in the states of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
