Cigarette stocks gain as GST council caps cess on demerit goods

ITC is currently trading at Rs. 287.05, up by 18.85 points or 7.03% from its previous closing of Rs. 268.20 on the BSE. The scrip opened at Rs. 276.00 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 289.00 and Rs. 276.00 respectively. So far 2889640 shares were traded on the counter.

Godfrey Phillips India is currently trading at Rs. 1308.00, up by 22.90 points or 1.78% from its previous closing of Rs. 1285.10 on the BSE. The scrip opened at Rs. 1288.00 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 1345.50 and Rs. 1280.00 respectively. So far 61903 shares were traded on the counter.

VST Industries is currently trading at Rs. 2822.70, up by 182.70 points or 6.92% from its previous closing of Rs. 2640.00 on the BSE. The scrip opened at Rs. 2640.00 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 2855.10 and Rs. 2640.00 respectively. So far 690 shares were traded on the counter.

Cigarette stocks such as ITC gained traction after the GST Council capped the cess on tobacco and cigarettes at 290% or Rs 4,170 per 1,000 cigarette sticks. Further, GST council cleared the two supporting Bills - State GST Bill and Union Territory GST (UTGST) Bill - setting the stage for implementing the landmark tax reform by July 01.
