Sales growth has been impressive over last five years: Sales have improved at 15% CAGR over 2006-11 on the back of better realisation in prices and increased production of coal from its mines. While coal production has improved at the rate of 5.2%, much of the growth in topline has come from increased realisations.

ROE and ROIC have moderated but are still high: Both ROE and ROIC have fallen from 70-80% in 2006 to much more moderate 33-34% which is among the top quartile of large global mining peers. This comes largely because of lower level of mechanization of mines compared to global peers. Coal India continues to use large labour forces for its mining activities.

Employee cost is significant: The Company has much higher labour cost than other mining companies. Pay revisions in the past have dented its profit margins in the short term. Though given its size and the pricing difference between International coal and its coal the company has passed on the increased cost of production to the customers in the following years.

NPM and OPM have remained steady most of the years: The Company has managed to maintain its profit margins in most of the years but in 2008 and 2009 when employee cost was significantly higher due to pay revisions than the preceding years the companies margins have suffered drastically. But in the latter years the company has managed to pass on the increased cost to its customers and recover its margins.

Looking at all this the company’s 10 YEAR PERFORMANCE has been rated Green (Very Good).
