 Large Cap Companies

The market capitalization (cap) of a company is arrived at by multiplying its share price by its total number of shares. Generally, companies forming the top 80% of the total market capitalization in any market are considered to be large cap.
At present, in India, these are classified as companies with a market cap of more than INR 20,000 crores. Large cap companies in India are mostly well-established, not all of them are investment worthy. Most large caps, however, are more stable and mature in comparison to small cap investments. Investing in large cap stocks in India with a proven financial track record will lessen chances of you owning companies that can go out of business or experiencing sudden volatility. Due to their size, large cap companies don’t offer the same growth opportunities as compared to small or mid cap companies. They, however, make up for it with their steady dividend stream. They may also lag the broader market in a bull run. However, good large cap companies can prove to be good investments in bear markets.

First Previous 1
  • Stability – Large cap stocks are considered to be relatively safe stocks. These companies have well analysed track records thus are less volatile than mid or small cap stocks.
  • Dividend Payouts – Since these companies are already mature and require less money for future growth, money is usually returned back to shareholders through dividends. Added to the stock price appreciation, these lead to considerable returns for an investor.
  • Research and Valuation - Since large cap companies have a long history of operation, it’s easy for investors to gather information on them.
