Thematic Investing FAQs

  • Core stocks should be about 60 to 70% of your equity portfolio
  • Booster stocks + Investments in themes should not exceed 30 to 40% of your equity portfolio
Thematic investing is an approach which focuses on capturing a long-term trend and investing in companies benefitting from such trends. Thematic investing enables investors to access structural, one-off shifts that can change an entire industry.
  • Helps to capitalize on future trends. By nature, it leads you to invest in business of the future.
  • Reasonably lower diversification than mutual funds which leads to better return.
  • Requires a decisive understanding of the impact of all trends leading to better understanding of the businesses.
  • Constant focus on trends and disruptive changes in the world, acts as a portfolio hedge.
  • A rightly identified theme can generate alpha (excess return over its benchmark).
A portfolio of the stocks of the thematic fund is Thematic Portfolio. Thematic portfolio contains various sectors and companies that are relevant to the primary theme. For e.g., a technology fund or a health care fund would only have specific sectoral companies only like IT and Tech companies for technology fund and pharmaceutical companies, hospital companies, health insurance companies for a health care fund in their thematic portfolios.
Mutual funds that aim at investing in a specific sector are called Sectoral funds. These funds operate as any other fund but invest only in businesses that operate in a particular sector or industry. For instance, a sector fund may invest in sectors like Banking, Pharma, Construction, or FMCG. On the other hand, a thematic fund may invest across all those sectors which fall under the theme. For instance, a consumption fund may invest in FMCG, Consumer Finance, Consumer Durable Companies, Restaurants etc.
You can select the themes you have conviction on MoneyWorks4me platform and then pick and choose the stocks based on your liking.
