-9.60 (-0.25%) Chennai Metro Rail Ltd has awarded a Rs 198-crore contract to L&T for the construction of a depot. The depot spread over 26 ha at Koyambedu in Chennai will berth metro rail trains during non-operational hours, maintenance cycles and feed the trains into the system. A modern operation control centre will be located in the depot to monitor the metro rail system.
The scope of work involves design and construction of viaduct ramps connecting the depot to the Koyambedu station, buildings and structures for stabling lines, washing plant, maintenance workshops, stores, multi-storeyed building for the Operation Control Centre and offices, and all services like power, lighting, fire protection, compound wall, canteen and air-conditioning and ventilation.
The contract was awarded on November 2 and the work started on December 1. The depot will be ready in 36 months. CMRL is a joint venture between the State Government and the Centre to set up a Rs 14,000 crore metro rail facility in Chennai.
