Reliance Industries has made its sixth oil discovery in the CB-ONN-2003/1 block in Gujarat. It has been named Dhirubhai-49. The discovery is significant as this play is expected to open more oil pool areas, leading to better hydrocarbon potential within the block. The well, CB10A-T1, was drilled to 1,500 metres in Part A of the block. The well flowed at a rate of 415 barrels of oil a day.

The company, which has notified the discovery to the Centre, said its potential commercial interest of the discovery is being ascertained through additional data gathering and analysis. The CB-ONN-2003/1 block is 130 km from Ahmedabad in the Cambay Basin. It covers 635-sq km in two parts: A and B.

RIL, as operator, holds 100 per cent interest in the block which was awarded under the NELP-V round of exploration bidding. According to the release, while the entire block was covered with 2D seismic, about 80 per cent has 3D seismic coverage. Of the 16 exploratory wells drilled in the block, 12 are located in Part A and the balance in Part B.
