Tata Motors’ arm JLR unveils pothole detection technology

Date: 11-06-2015

Tata Motors’ British-based arm Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled a new ‘Pothole Alert’ research project which could see information on road conditions detected and shared with other parties via the cloud. The company is researching a new connected car technology that will allow a vehicle to identify the location and severity of potholes, broken drains and manhole covers, and then share this data real-time via the cloud with other vehicles and with road authorities to help them prioritise repairs.

Jaguar Land Rover researchers are developing technology to share this data with other cars via the cloud so all drivers get a warning about dangerous potholes. If a car can receive a warning from another vehicle about severe potholes or broken manholes ahead, then drivers would be able to slow down and avoid the danger - or the car could adjust suspension settings to reduce the impact and smooth the ride. This could help reduce the potential for punctures, wheel and vehicle damage as well as road accidents.

Tata Motors is India's largest automobile company, is the leader in commercial vehicles in each segment, and among the top in passenger vehicles with winning products in the compact, midsize car and utility vehicle segments. It is also the world's fourth largest truck and bus manufacturer.
