2.97 (3.65%) In a move which should alarm power developers against illegal dumping of waste, NHPC has been fined with an exorbitant amount of Rs 75 lakh for violation of forest laws. The Department of Forests, Environment and Wildlife in Sikkim has fined the company for unauthorised dumping of muck at Elaichi Khola and the area downstream of Teesta Stage V in East district.
Keeping in view the fragile environment and vulnerability of flora and fauna in the area surrounding Teesta Stage-V, the Forest Department directed NHPC to pay the penalty for rehabilitation purposes which was later reduced to approximately Rs 75 lakh in an out-of-court settlement.
The company for the quarter ended December 31, 2011 has posted a fall of 29.43% in its net profit of Rs 212.18 crore as compared to Rs 300.67 crore for the same quarter in the previous year. However, total income has increased by 18.31% from Rs 917.20 crore for Q3FY11 to Rs 1,085.13 crore in the quarter under review.
