Tata Motors plans to commence operations of CV assembly plant in Africa

Auto major Tata Motors is planning to commence operations of an assembly plant for commercial vehicles in South Africa within next few days. The company, however, has not provided any detail regarding installed capacity at the plant and how much investment the company has made in construction of the unit.

Earlier in January this year, the company announced that the company would assemble small and medium-sized trucks in the facility. Currently, the company has truck assembly units in Thailand and Bangladesh. The company at present exports both commercial and passenger vehicles to South Africa.

Tata Motors’ June sales (including export) witnessed a marginal fall of 1% at 66,358. Domestic sales of the company for reporting month stood at 61,264 units, down 2% over 62,602 units in the year ago period. The company’s net profit for the year ended March 31, 2011 dropped by 19.11% to Rs 1811.82 crore as compared to Rs 2240.08 crore for the year ended March 31, 2010.
