NTPC and IIT Kanpur have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Research and Development in the areas of mutual interest such as Power System Engineering, Real Time Digital Simulations, Smart Grid, Computational Sciences, Grid Connectivity of Renewables and micro grids, Sensor, Robotics and automation in Delhi. Joint R&D projects will be also taken up for development of new technologies, process, and product in the field of optimization & efficiency improvements etc. by the two organisations.

NTPC is engaged in generating power. Its services include consultancy, power management institute and research and development center. It offers services in engineering, project and construction management, operation and maintenance of power generating plants and consultancy services to power utility sectors.
