RIL mulls launch of voice and data services by September

Date: 23-03-2012

Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries (RIL) is working on a plan to launch telecommunications operations complete with voice and data services by September, a development that has the potential to be a game-changer in India's telecom market.

Reliance unit Infotel Broadband Services already has a license that will allow it to provide broadband wireless Internet across India, but not voice service. However, a new national policy-which is scheduled to be in place by June, seeks to unify all communication licenses-that would likely permit Infotel to provide voice service too.

The company which was earlier hesitant on voice service is now planning to add that to the offerings as the proposal of data along with voice service would garner more users to the company than giving the proposal of providing with just Internet service. Voice services contribute more than 85% of Indian telecom operators' revenue, though Internet offers higher margins.

Offering voice service on fourth-generation (4G) technology, by Reliance, may however become a challenge due to the infancy of the technology and non-availability of affordable devices as yet.
