India slips to 5th place in World Steel Production for H12011

Steel production of India for the first half of 2011 stood at 35.636 Million Tonne (MT), almost 10% of China’s total production of steels for the same period. India’s steel production in the first six months increased by 4.8% to 35.636 MT from 33.994 MT in the corresponding period of 2010, while China registered growth of 9.6% to 350.543 MT from 319.881 MT in the same period previous year.

As per the World Steel Association (WSA), during the January to June 2011, steel production of China stood at 350.543 MT which is almost half of the world’s total steel production for the same period. Globally, steel production in the first six month of 2011 stood at 757.771 MT, China was followed by Japan, with the steel production of 54.071 MT and USA with a production of 42.654 MT.

India lost its fourth place to Russia, by producing 34.580 MT of steel it become the fourth largest producer of steel for the first half of 2011. During 2010 India was the fourth largest producer of steel, by producing 68.3 MT, and in 2009 it was third largest producer of steel by producing 63.5 MT. India’s production of steel for month of June stood at 5.960 MT, 5.876 MT in May, 6.150 MT in April, 6.350 MT in March, 5.100 MT in February and 5.610 MT in January this year.
