55.55 (4.00%) Reliance Industries’ (RIL) telecom arm -- Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio) is reportedly planning to use satellites to provide services to the rural and remote parts of India through its 4G LTE-based voice and data service. The company is deploying backhaul-based network, using capacity from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and technology from Hughes Communications (HCIL). Jio has awarded a contract worth over $10 million to HCIL to set up the satellite backhaul for the 4G network in these areas.
RIL is India’s largest private sector company. The company’s activities span hydrocarbon exploration and production, petroleum refining and marketing, petrochemicals, retail and 4G digital services.
