Hamid Ansari begins second term as Vice-President

After 5 successful years of vice-presidentialship, UPA candidate Padma Shree Hamid Ansari on Tuesday  was re-elected as India's 14th Vice President, defeating NDA nominee Jaswant Singh by a large margin of 252 votes. 

It is for the second term Ansari is holding the position of a vice-president, the second person to achieve this after philosopher and statesman S Radhakrishnan. The vice-president is elected by members of an electoral college consisting of members of both houses of parliament in accordance with the system of proportional representation by means of single transferable vote. The voting began at 10:00 am and continued till 5:00 pm and the results were declared at around 7:30pm.

In the past, a suave and sober Padma Shree awardee Ansari has served many positions, including as Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, Indian High Commissioner to Australia and Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1961and also became Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University in May 2000 and held the post till March 2002.
