Govt aims to improve electricity supply in next five years: PM

Targeting adequate and improved power supply, Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh during Independence Day speech has said that the country’s next objective is to improve the supply of electricity and to provide electricity to each and every household in the next 5 years. The Rajiv Gandhi Rural Electrification Scheme, launched to fulfill UPA government’s promise to provide electricity to all villages, has electrified more than 1 lakh new villages and presently almost every rural area is equipped with power supply.

Recently, nation faced the worst-ever power cuts due to power grid failures. As many as 21 states of the country were left without electricity for several hours last month, as three major transmission grids collapsed.

PM stated that the government now aims to increase investments in the whole infra sector with the help of private players. For the next five years infrastructural developments will be taking centre stage and are likely to attract investments worth around $1 trillion.
