Cabinet clears SC/ST promotion quota bill

Date: 04-09-2012
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday, cleared an amendment bill restoring reservation for SCs and STs in promotion in the government jobs. The Bill will be introduced in the Parliament by the government on Wednesday or Thursday.

During the last month, the Bill had found majority support at an all-party meeting convened by the Prime Minister. But the congress's new-found ally, the Samajwadi Party had lashed out at the Centre saying that while reservation of jobs for SCs/STs and OBC candidates was fine, reservations in promotions would not be such a good idea. Further, the government has assured Mulayam Singh Yadav that OBCs will also be brought under the ambit of the Bill in later days.

Earlier, Attorney General Goolam E Vahanvati had reported written to the Law Ministry, on the reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in job promotions, pointing that the proposal will not be legally possible as the reservation for SCs/ STs in promotions could be struck down by the Supreme Court.
