India likely to produce 24.5 MT of sugar in 2012/13

Date: 12-09-2012

The production of sugar, this year, is likely to surpass the demand as the country which is the world’s biggest consumer of the sweetener is likely to produce 24.5 million tonnes (MT) of sugar in 2012/13, higher than the local demand of about 22 MT.

For a third straight year in a row, India is likely to produce more sugar than consumed locally in the 2012/13 marketing year starting on October 01, although exportable surplus will be small, as per the information provided by Food Minister KV Thomas.

Besides, an expert panel constituted to study lifting curbs on the sugar sector will soon submit its report.
