Santosh Hegde calls Jaitley’s remark on judiciary as unfortunate

Date: 01-10-2012
Criticizing BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) leader and a lawyer, Arun Jaitley's comments on the judiciary, Former Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde remaked it as unfortunate. On to this, Arun Jaitley alleged saying that judgments at times are influenced by post-retirement jobs. However, supports have been raised by India Against Corruption (IAC) member Shanti Bhushan, demanding for a National Judicial Commission in order to clean up the judiciary and punish corrupt judges.

As the clamour for post-retirement jobs among judges is affecting the impartiality of the judiciary, Arun Jaitley further demanded for a two-year cooling off period before appointment of retired judges to tribunals and commissions. BJP president Nitin Gadkari, who was also present at the conference, also supported Jaitley's views and suggested for a two years gap after retirement, stating that unless it might give room for centre to influence the court directly or indirectly and the dream to have an independent, impartial and fair judiciary in the nation would never come true.

Further, Jaitley made it clear that he is not against the increase in the tenure of judges or for pensions equal to last drawn salaries for judges. Talking about the CBI, the BJP minister alleged that the agencies are misused to blackmail the opposition parties. Citing the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party, Jaitley said that both the SP and BSP spoke against the government during the elections but was then supported because of the CBI threat.
