Bharti Airtel plans to buy optical network gear: Report

Date: 29-04-2013

Bharti Airtel is reportedly planning to buy optical network gear from US-based Ciena Communications, in order to increase the capacity of its i2i undersea cable network linking India and Singapore. With this initiative, the company plans to offer data connectivity to Reliance Industries' telecom arm Reliance Jio Infocomm for 4G services, by leveraging its submarine cable system.

Telco firm is likely to increase its global submarine cable network in two stages - initially in the Mumbai-Chennai-Singapore cable route and eventually between Singapore and Hong Kong. It aims to offer high bandwidth services to customers in the biggest business hubs across the Asia-Pacific region.

Bharti Airtel is a leading integrated telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa. The company ranks amongst the top 5 mobile service providers globally in terms of subscribers.
