Bharti Airtel initiates hiving off its African telecom towers: Report

As suggested by investment bankers, Bharti Airtel has reportedly initiated the process of hiving off its African telecom tower assets into a separate entity, which could be then sold to its listed subsidiary, Bharti Infratel at a valuation of $2 billion. The company is expected to complete this process by end of the financial year.

Bharti could utilize these funds for own growth and for the prepayment of the high cost loans. Meanwhile, based on current valuation of around Rs 88 lakh a tower, Bharti Infratel would have to pay close to Rs 11,300 crore to buy out the company's assets.

Bharti Airtel has reported a fall of 31.12% in its net profit at Rs 1084.40 crore in Q4FY13 as compared to net profit of Rs 1574.30 crore in the same quarter previous year. However, the total income of the company rose by 6.36% to Rs 11640.10 crore as compared to Rs 10943.50 crore in corresponding quarter last year.

On consolidated basis, the group has reported a fall of 49.44% in its net profit at Rs 508.60 crore in quarter under review as compared to Rs 1005.90 crore in same period previous year.  However, total income on consolidated basis has increased by 9.19% to Rs 20460.40 crore as against Rs 18738.80 crore in a year ago period.
