Tata Steel’s output may hit by blanket ban of iron ore mining in Odisha: Report

Date: 05-06-2013

India’s leading steel producer, Tata Steel’s captive iron ore output may get affected by the blanket ban on mining in Odisha as proposed by the M B Shah Commission. The entity is expected to lose 7 million tonne of the steelmaking raw material annually, because of this ban.

If captive mining is suspended indefinitely, Tata Steel will experience a shortage of iron ore, which will force the entity to operate only at about 60% utilizations. It has been in the process of establishing a 6mtpa steel capacity in Odisha. For this facility the company was planning to get iron ore from the Khandband mine (Odisha), a ban on captive mining might delay the project.
