National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), an apex organization of marketing cooperatives for agricultural produce in India, under Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India has organized a meeting of onion importers in Mumbai on September 23. The meet was to understand and resolve issues relating to clearance of imported stock of onion arriving at JNPT, Mumbai with regards to phyto-sanitary and food security issues.
The meeting which was chaired by Managing Director of NAFED was attended by leading onion exporters / importers and senior officials of FSSAI. All ground problems being faced by importers were discussed exhaustively in the meeting and majority of the issues were resolved to the satisfaction of all the stake holders.
There is expectation that across the country there would be a higher production of onion in the kharif season which will ease the pressure on onion prices. Besides, there is a likelihood of arrivals of around 600 tonnes of imported onion at Mumbai within the next week, which will further increase supply.
