NTPC plans to commission its first hydel project in six months

NTPC, the largest power generator in the country is planning to commission its first hydro power project, Koldam in Himachal Pradesh, in the next 6 months. Koldam project with an installed capacity of 800 MW ( 4x200 MW) will provide the much needed peaking capacity to the Northern grid and annually generate 3054 GWh electricity at 90% dependable year basis.

The Project faced several challenges during its construction due to geological surprises and environmental issues. With dedication and commitment of the team Koldam, the project is nearing its completion stage with the start of reservoir impounding which is expected to take 10-11 months to complete. The Koldam Project is located 6 Kms upstream of Dehar Power House of Beas Satluj Link Project (BSL) and is expected to enhance the life of Bhakra Reservoir considerably by trapping the sediments of river Satluj in Koldam.
