Jet Airways may have to pay Rs 300 crore toward carbon emission tax: Report

19 Dec 2011 Evaluate

Jet Airways, the nation's largest private airline, may have to shell out an additional amount of Rs 300 crore toward carbon emission tax for flying to Europe, as mentioned in some reports. Jet Airways and other carriers have been asked by the European Union (EU) to submit their carbon emission data so that tax will be calculated and levied according to it.

The Indian Government has asked the airline company to refuse from paying tax. With support from more than two dozen countries including the US and China, India has led the opposition for this demand. According to reports, carriers ferried a total of 2.5 billion passengers and emitted 650 million tons of carbon dioxide globally last year.

Carbon emission tax is an environmental tax levied on the carbon content of fuels and in this case, if airlines are charged with it, they will have to pay anything between $100 - $150 on each tone of carbon emitted by flying their aircraft.
