New govt must focus on agriculture reforms to keep inflation under control: India Inc

16 May 2014 Evaluate

With the country on verge of electing a new government, India Inc has said that improvement in agriculture scenario will lead to lower inflation and the new government must introduce reforms in the agricultural sector to keep inflation under check. The WPI inflation eased to 5.20% in the month of April as against 5.70% in March mainly driven by sharp slide in the prices of food articles. The inflation in food articles eased to 8.64% in the reported month as against 9.90% in March mainly on the back of softening in vegetable inflation.

PHD Chamber of Commerce President Sharad Jaipuria has said that the new government should focus on agricultural reforms by augmenting storage, providing infrastructure and minimising wastages. Bold agriculture reforms will improve the agriculture infrastructure which in turn will lead to lower inflation and solution to various macroeconomic vulnerabilities. Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat said that as many bulk products especially the agriculture produce, are perishable and require fast-moving supply lines, addressing supply side constraints would be a biggest challenge to the new government. Therefore, it has become imperative for new government to scrap the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act to allow farmers to sell their produce freely. Furthermore, taxes and commissions on agriculture products in both their raw and processed forms need to be minimized.

FICCI President Sidharth Birla said that inflation has shown a dip mainly on the back of moderation in prices of food articles and fuel. However, the prices can increases in coming future given the recent increase in the diesel prices and uncertain outlook for monsoon. Therefore, new government should implement comprehensive action plan to check the high inflation.
