Steel consumption in April up 1.8% to 5 mt

India's steel consumption grew by 1.8% in April this year to 5.030 million tonnes on increased demand from infrastructure and automotive sectors. India had consumed 4.943 million tonnes of steel in the same month a year ago. Non-alloy steel, used in infrastructure developments, consumer durables and steel packaging industries, consumption was 4.689 million tonnes in the month, up 1.4% over the corresponding period last year.

The consumption of alloy steel, used in utensils and automotive applications, was higher by 7.6% to 0.341 million tonnes during the month as opposed to 0.317 million tonnes in the year ago period. While production was up by 4.8% during the month over April 2010, imports came down by a whopping 65.9% to stand at 0.332 million tonnes vis-a-vis 0.853 million tonnes during the same period year ago.
