India will compensate oil marketing companies for selling petroleum products below cost as mandated by the government with cash in the budget session of parliament starting in February, Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla said on Tuesday.

Contrary to expectations, the additional spending plan that the government tabled in parliament on Monday did not provide for compensation to oil marketing companies for selling their products, such as diesel and LPG, below cost.
