PM meets four Union Ministers to chart out anti-price rise strategy

19 Jun 2014 Evaluate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with four Union ministers in charge of agriculture or food-related portfolios, to chart out strategy for curbing the persistent rise in prices. Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti, Fertilizers Minister Ananth Kumar and Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh attended the meeting, among others.

In the meeting held, Modi took a note of the demand-supply gap vis-a-vis protein-rich food items such as milk, eggs, and fish, and the availability of fertilizers in the backdrop of rising inflation, which could be aggravated by the sub-normal monsoon predicted for India. Things such as current availability of protein-rich items and steps to increase supplies by officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying were also discussed by the ministers in the meeting.

The ministers convened this meeting in the wake of Iraq crisis which may spell additional problems for the Narendra Modi government, which is already grappling to deal with challenges posed by errant southwest monsoon and increase in wholesale price inflation.

Further, the government for which fighting inflation remains top priority, has already taken steps to ensure that the commodity prices do not escalate further and is now planning a real-time data monitoring system to keep track of food production, existing stocks and their prices in the market. The Centre, for this will coordinate with state agencies and governments to ensure a balance between supply and demand is maintained.
