State owned oil firms hike jet fuel prices by 2.4%

16 Jun 2011 Evaluate

After two successive cuts, the state owned oil firms have increase jet fuel or aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices by 2.4% in step with the firming international rates. Oil companies have hiked the ATF by Rs 1,377 per kilolitre (KL) to Rs 57,843 per KL in Delhi with effect from June 15, 2011 midnight. This hike in ATF prices have come after two reductions on May 16 and June 1 due to increase in international crude oil prices.

In these two cuts, the ATF prices had come down by Rs 4,094 per KL. ATF price in Mumbai, home to nation's busiest airport, was hiked by Rs 1,434 to Rs 58,601 per KL. The ATF price in Delhi on October 01, 2010 was Rs 40,728.52 per KL. The rates were increased by Rs 19,831.48 per KL, or 48.7% till April 30.

This hike in jet fuel could lead to increase in passenger fare, as the profit margin of aviation companies are already suffering from the increased ATF prices. The prices of jet fuel have increased by almost 42% from October 2010 because of increase in international crude oil prices.

The jet fuel or ATF accounts for 40% of the airlines’ operating cost and rates vary from airport to airport depending upon the local sale tax. The public owned OMCs revise ATF prices on 1st and 16th of every month, based on the average international price in the previous fortnight.
