Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers celebrated as the party announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's close aide and general secretary Amit Shah as their new president. Celebrations also took place in Kanpur and Lucknow, with party workers dancing to the beat of drums.

Party spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi congratulated the leader and said that the party had taken the right decision by electing Shah as the new party President and added that they want a good leader after Rajnath Singh as the party president.

Earlier today, the BJP announced that Amit Shah will take over as the party's new president from previous incumbent and now Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. After the announcement, Shah took the blessing of party patriarch L.K. Advani, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior leaders, including Murli Manohar Joshi, M.Venkaiah Naidu, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Ananth Kumar. Shah was the campaign in-charge in Uttar Pradesh, where BJP secured 71 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats that were up for grabs during the general elections.
