Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir has assured the people of terror-hit state that Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) would be revoked “only in our regime”. About two months ago, Omar made a public statement that AFSPA will be revoked from four districts of Srinagar, Badgam, Samba and Jammu.

Army chief General V.K. Singh commented on social networking site twitter 'Just one summer of peace does not mean normalcy.' Also, Singh in an interview to the Sainik Samachar armed forces journal stated 'One should not view the security situation of reduced violence in one summer but allow consolidation of the gains made before taking a call on revoking the AFSPA.' Responding to which Chief Minister said 'We stand by our promise, one summer? Is AFSPA for law and order or anti-militancy? Revoking AFSPA will aid terror groups (the army chief says).'

Omar Abdullah’s decision of revocation of AFSPA, which gives the armed forces wide powers to shoot/ arrest and search all in the name of 'aiding civil power', was disapproved by the union home minister and the defence minister, however, Chief Minister claims to see off the law gradually from the state before end of his present tenure.
