Nalco inks MoU with IREL to set up Titanium Slag Plant

National Aluminium Company (Nalco) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Rare Earths (IREL), a Government of India undertaking under the Department of Atomic Energy, for setting up a Titanium Slag Plant having a capacity of 1 lakh tonne. The company has taken this step as part of its diversification plan and the said plant will be located at Odisha’s Sand Complex at Chatrapur in Ganjam district.

As per the MoU, the project is contemplated in Joint Venture mode for which feasibility study and technology selection would be carried out very soon. The project envisages value addition to ilmenite to produce titanium slag which is an intermediate product for making titanium sponge and titanium pigments.

Its integrated operations cover the entire aluminium production value chain from mining bauxite, refining alumina, smelting aluminium, captive power generation to a strong logistic network in terms of rail & port facilities, coal mining and handling plant to support its operations and to become one of the most cost-efficient aluminium companies across the globe.
