Punjab paddy cultivation to get a lift due to early rains in June

17 Jun 2011 Evaluate

The farming community in Punjab is all set to cheers due to intermittent and mild rainfall spread through out Punjab early June. The Agriculture minister stated that heavy rainfalls may bring 10 percent increase in paddy production. Heavy rainfall in major areas of Punjab such as Patiala, Balachaur, Roop Nagar, Shahpur is proving highly beneficial to paddy transplantation, the major Kharif crop.

According to Agriculture minister Punjab Sucha Singh Langah, farmers would be able to transplant paddy on time taking the advantage of heavy rainfall. The farmers are utilizing this opportunity to reduce the initial production cost of paddy. The Punjab Government had made advanced arrangements to provide three phase eight hours continuous power supply to tube wells but early rains have supplemented the efforts of state government. The advancement of early rains would not only bring reduction in power consumption but on the other hand would also help in re-charging ground water level.

An early rain has helped in early paddy transplantation from June 10, 2011 under pre-reservation of sub soil water Act. Also the rain water helped in cultivating paddy saplings and improving the quality of paddy transplantation as rain water contains several elements of minerals.
