The bail plea of DMK MP Kanimozhi and co-accused Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar has been opposed by CBI in Supreme Court. CBI has opposed it on the grounds that if released, they could tamper with evidence and influence witnesses.

According to CBI the investigation in the 2G case is at an advanced stage, it will not be proper for the apex court to grant bail to the accused. Kanimozhi has been named a co-conspirator in the CBI charge-sheet in the 2G case and has been charged with receiving kickbacks worth Rs 214 crore and conspiring with former telecom minister A Raja.

As per the charge-sheet, the money had been routed to the Kalaignar TV channel from DB Realty of Shahid Usman Balwa, who was one of the beneficiaries of the 2G spectrum allocation scam, with his another firm, Swan Telecom, securing the 2G spectrum license during the tenure of former telecom minister A Raja.
