CBI arrests accused under NRHM scam

In the election season and after deferring of Lokpal (ombudsman) Bill in Parliament, one more scam has been unearthed in India -- National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam. The investigating agency -- CBI had registered five cases on January 02 and has arrested accused in the NRHM scam.

CBI has arrested former Uttar Pradesh Small Industries Corporation Managing Director Abhay Kumar Bajpai, former Director General, Family Welfare, SP Ram and trader Saurabh Jain. Uttar Pradesh Jal Board General Manager P K Jain who has been already arrested by investigating agency is accused of causing a loss of Rs 5.46 crore in the upgrading work of 134 district hospitals. According to CBI, Rs 13.4 crore was given to Construction and Design Services, a unit of UP Jal Nigam, for the upgrade work of 134 districts hospitals.  The materials installed in the hospitals were found to be of inferior and sub-standard quality thereby causing an approximate loss of Rs 5.46 crore to the exchequer.

CBI has also raided former family welfare minister and a prime suspect in the National Rural Health Mission (NHRM) scam -- Babu Singh Kushwaha’s house in Lucknow. Agency has registered case against Kushwaha alleging loss of about Rs 28 crore in implementing the Centrally-sponsored scheme meant for 72 districts of Uttar Pradesh. He was a BSP, OBC leader and was sacked by Chief Minister Mayawati post his name appearing in accused list.

Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry granted as much as Rs 10,000 crore to Uttar Pradesh under NRHM for the period 2005-06 till date.
