Election Commission defers UP polls date

Amid confusion over dates of Barawafat festival, the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad, Election Commission has decided to postpone the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls date. The polls were scheduled to held on February 04, 2012 will now be held on February 08, 2012 followed by counting on March 06, 2012.

The official statement issued by EC cited that 'the Commission has today decided that the notification for 60 ACs going for poll on February 4, 2012 shall not be issued on January 10. This is due to uncertainty about the date of 'Barawafat' festival which may also fall on February 4, 2012.'

As per the earlier announcement, the seven phases of UP elections were scheduled between February 4 and 28. On February 04, 60 constituencies in districts of Pilbhit, Rampur, Bareilly, Kheri, Shahjahanpur, Badaun, Moradabad, Bijnor, Bhim Nagar and Jyotiba Phule Nagar were scheduled to go to polls.

EC has reached to this conclusion after several political parties made written requests to the commission to defer the dates.
