Oil Minister soon to approach appropriate forum for freeing of diesel rates

03 Sep 2014 Evaluate

In an encouraging development for public oil marketing companies (OMCs), Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan asserted that there were good signals from international market and his ministry would approach appropriate forum for freeing of rates. This development came on the day when under-recovery, difference between retail sale price and its actual cost, of the diesel dropped to a historic low of just 8 paisa. However, Dharmendra Pradhan underscored that there was nothing conclusive as yet.

The NDA government continued with the previous UPA regime's policy of increasing diesel rates in small doses every month to bridge the gap between cost and retail prices. So far, rates have cumulatively risen by Rs 11.81 per litre in 19 installments since January 2013.

Further, Oil Ministry unveiled that once the under-recovery was completely wiped-out, a proposal for de-regulation of diesel rates would be put out to the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs.

Formerly, petrol and diesel prices were deregulated in April 2002 when NDA government was in power. But administered pricing regime made a backdoor entry once Congress led government came to power as international oil prices went through the roof. In June 2010 however it freed petrol price from its control and rates have since them moved more or less in tandem with cost. However, it was only in January, 2013, the UPA decided to deregulate diesel prices in stages through monthly 50 paisa a litre increases. Rates were last raised on August 31 after which losses have dipped.
