As per Rubber Board’s data, Indian natural rubber production rose marginally by 0.97% in December to 104,000 metric tonnes from 103,000 tonnes a year ago. While, the production during the first nine months of the fiscal year ending March 31 increased 4.3% from a year earlier to 679,100 tonnes. The consumption grew marginally to 7.17 lakh tonnes during April-December 2011 from 7.08 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of last fiscal.

India's rubber consumption in December rose 4.4% to 84,000 tons from 80,465 tonnes in the same month last year. The rise in consumption is likely to restrict a further fall in prices, which have already declined nearly 25% from their record highs. Imports too surged by 57.44% to 21,734 tonnes from 13,805 tonnes. However, exports declined by 63.05% to 922 tonnes from 2,495 tonnes during the period under review.

Meanwhile, the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries has said that sentiment in the natural rubber market could improve from February on lower supply but the gain could be limited by sluggish demand and lack of support from speculators. As per the association, the Indian production is expected to rise 4% to 9.30 lakh tonnes against 8.94 lakh tonnes last year. Production growth last year was, however, higher at 5.1%.
