Punjab gears up for Assembly Polls under strict eye of EC

After Uttar Pradesh Assembly Polls’ preparation hitting headlines, Punjab state is now gearing up for polls. Punjab Assembly Polls however, have made a slow start under the strict eye of Election Commission (EC). Elections to the 117 assembly constituencies in this northwest state are scheduled for January 30.

EC is taking every possible step to ensure that total expenditure per candidate remains limited to Rs 16 lakh. This amount should include placing of advertisements, putting up hoardings and organizing rallies in their respective assembly segments and EC officials should be informed about the same. The candidates have been asked to maintain logs of all this expenses. The date for completing the process of scrutiny of nomination papers and withdrawal of candidature is still five days away.

Capt. Malwinder Singh, brother of Capt Amarinder Singh who left the Congress has joined the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal, which is believed to be big gain for the latter. Besides Singh brothers, SAD has fielded former Indian Hockey captain and Olympian Pargat Singh from Jalandhar as well as Dr. Navjot Kaur, wife of BJP MP and cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, from Amritsar (East). Other honchos who will be contesting for SAD includes former Punjab police chief Gill and former Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister D. S. Guru. 

On the other hand, Prime Minister will be seen rallying for Congress in Punjab and is expected to address at least two meetings in the state.
