India to produce surplus sugar for 5th straight year: ISMA

18 Sep 2014 Evaluate

India, the world's second biggest sugar producer after Brazil, is likely to be in surplus production for the fifth straight sugar season despite erratic rainfall in key growing areas, according to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA). According to September 2014 satellite images procured by the industry body, the south Asian country is likely to produce 25-25.5 million tonnes of sugar in 2014/15 year starting October 1, compared with local demand of about 23 million tonnes.

ISMA estimates in July 2014 for sugar season 2014-15 placed production at 253 lakh tonnes based on higher acreage in Maharashtra and Karnataka, even though the all-India cane acreage this year is lower than last year. ISMA has estimated sugarcane acreage at 52.94 lakh hectares, which is a percent lower than last year.

While, advance estimates by ISMA have placed the total cane acreage in Maharashtra at 10.41 lakh hectares, about 11% higher than last year, cane acreage reported from Uttar Pradesh is around 23.07 lakh hectares, about 8% less than last year. Meanwhile, Karnataka is estimated to have about 4.9 lakh hectares of acreage under cane, about 2% higher than last year. Besides, hit by draught like situation, around 2.5 lakh hectares are expected to come under cane cultivation in Tamil Nadu, which is about 12-13% less than last year.

Lastly, the sugar producer’s body underscored it would review its first advance estimate in October 2014, once there was clarity on the impact of monsoon. As of now, due to the erratic monsoon and difficulties in making a correct assessment of its impact, it has estimated production of around 250-255 lakh tonnes for the 2014-15 sugar season.
