Asian markets exhibit mixed trade in early deals on Thursday

Asian equity indices are exhibiting mixed trade in early deals on Thursday, with investors looking for fresh direction. Despite a strong close on Wall Street overnight, the mood is somewhat cautious in the Asian region amid uncertainty about the near-term outlook for the global economy and on speculation that US Federal Reserve may start hiking rates sooner than earlier thought. The Japanese stock market opened on a bright note on the account of a weaker yen. In economic news, corporate service prices in Japan were up 3.5 percent on year in August that was below forecasts for a gain of 3.7 percent following the downwardly revised 3.4 percent increase in July. On a monthly basis, prices eased 0.2 percent following the flat reading in July. China’s Shanghai Composite rose as utility and consumer discretionary companies advanced. Among other markets in the Asia-Pacific region, Indonesia and Shanghai is up with modest gains. Malaysia is up slightly, while Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan are trading weak.

Nikkei 225 spurted by 171.88 points or 1.06% to 16,339.33, Jakarta Composite climbed 25.00 points or 0.48% to 5,199.00, Shanghai Composite added 12.33 points or 0.53% to 2,355.91 and FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI was up by 0.70 points or 0.04% to 1,840.78.

On the flip side, Hang Seng slipped by 17.89 points or 0.07% to 23,903.72, KOSPI Index contracted by 4.62 points or 0.23% to 2,031.02, Straits Times dropped 6.80 points or 0.21% to 3,286.01 and Taiwan Weighted was down by 83.37 points or 0.92% to 9,015.12.
