Natural rubber production grows while consumption declines in May

21 Jun 2011 Evaluate

Natural rubber production (NR) increased 5.9 per cent in May compared to the same period last year. Production in May increased to 59,700 tonnes as against 56,400 tonnes in the same month last year. In April, NR production was 56,800 tonnes as against 53,500 tonnes in 2010. For the first time during the past.

On the same time the rubber consumption has seen a decline in May as compared to the same month last year, a total of 81,000 tonne of NR was consumed in the month of May, which is lower by 1.9% as compared to April 2011. Mainly because the automobile sector is showing signs of a slowdown and weakness in the growth of the automobile sector, after clocking a 25-30% rise last year, would adversely affect the prospects of the tyre sector.

Meanwhile, rubber import has been growing steadily and stood at 22,811 tonne during April and May as compared to 26,248 tonne during the same period last year. The higher import amid lower consumption is likely to affect the market sentiments and can bring down prices.
