India, China begin talks to resolve border disputes

With the mounting tensions on Indo-China border, the neighboring countries have resumed their talks today. This is the 15th round of the Special Representatives meeting with the Chinese delegation, wherein National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon is representing India and State Councilor Dai Bingguo is his Chinese counterpart.

China’s protest over Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama's participation in the Global Buddhist Congregation in the capital around November 2011 pushed these talks to January 2012. The main issue on the agenda of talks is to place a mechanism for management of the border between the two nations. Earlier, in April 2011, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao had taken a decision to set up such mechanism.

The talks between two neighboring nations are eyed as border disputes are hurting the bilateral relations. Recently, Menon had termed the boundary question as a 'difficult issue' that has remained unsolved. 'On the settlement itself, we are in the second stage of the three stage process of agreeing principles, a framework and finally a boundary line,' he had said.
