Indian railways register an increase of 4.79% in commodity-wise freight revenue

Indian Railways has recorded an increase of 4.79% in the revenue generation from commodity-wise freight traffic during the first two months of current financial year. It generated revenue of Rs 11,147 crore in April-May 2011 in comparison with Rs 10044.45 crore during the corresponding period of last year.

Indian Railways carried 157.23 million tonnes of commodity-wise freight traffic during April-May 2011 as compared to 146.41 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 7.39%. The net kilo metres also increased by almost 6% in the first two months, it increased from 98,421 million in April-May 2010 to 1,04,237 million during April-May 2011.

Out of total earnings of Rs 5656.85 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic during the month of May 2011, Rs 2340.51 crore came from transportation of 37.70 million tonnes of coal and Rs 786.04 crore from 9.67 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users. Other commodities’ revenue include Rs 530.43 crore from 8.62 million tonnes of cement, Rs 382.04 crore from 3.78 million tonnes of food grains, Rs 296.04 crore from 3.52 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL) while Rs 309.72 crore came from carrying 2.69 million tonnes of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points.

Indian Railways also generated Rs 255.52 crore from 3.38 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs 90.41 crore from 1.25 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 264.42 crore from 2.97 million tonnes by container service, Rs 401.72 crore from 6.13 million tonnes of other goods.
