NMDC, the country's largest iron ore producer is planning to invest Rs 9,000 crore to set up a five-million-tonne steel plant in Bellary, Karnataka, with association with Russian steel maker OJSC Severstal.

Initially, the plant will have a capacity of 2 million tonnes per annum expandable upto 5 million tonnes per annum. Construction of the plant, to be spread over 2,800 acres, will start in 2012 and is to be completed within 36 months. The company will source coal from Russia and iron-ore from near Bellary.

Both the companies had signed a MoU last December for 50:50 joint-venture. The joint venture would have its captive coking coal mining subsidiary in Russia and iron-ore mining subsidiary in India to ensure long-term supply of these raw materials. NMDC has already applied for the land from Government of Karnataka and has got in principle agreement for around 2,800 acres.

Severstal is one of the top 10 steel makers in the world and has units in Russia, the US and Europe. It will share its latest technology for the proposed plant, which will focus on producing superior grade steel used in sectors such as automobiles.
