Latin American nations look for two-fold trade growth with India by 2013-14

The LAC region which has 43 countries with a combined economy of $5 trillion is expecting a twofold growth in trade with Asia’s third largest economy - India in the subsequent two years, according to exporters' body Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO). The trade between the LAC and India in the financial year 2010-11 was at $24.43 billion which comprised of $10.23 billion exports from India while imports aggregated to $14.2 billion.

The nations from LAC region encompass a huge potential for growth and offer a plethora of opportunities for an emerging economy like India. The pace of growth of trade between the two geographies has rapidly grown since 2003-04 with India's imports from the region growing faster than exports. While, India's engagement with the region has seen a 10-fold increase in the last decade, the target is to take it to $50 billion by 2013-14.

One of the nations from LAC region - Chile, the nation with which India has Preferential Trade Agreements (PTAs) is contemplating the idea of upgrading its PTA with India into a full-fledged trade-opening pact covering investment and services as well and a meeting of officials from both the nations in this regard is expected early in February. India’s only other PTA in region is with MERCOSUR, a trade bloc of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
