Former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairperson Suresh Kalmadi, who was arrested on April 26, 2011 has been granted bail today on surety of Rs 5 lakhs. Kalmadi’s bail plea in June last year was rejected by the trial court. Along with Kalmadi, other accused former OC director general V K Verma’s bail plea has also been approved. Although, investigating agency Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had opposed the bail of the two accused.
Kalmadi was lodged for causing loss of over Rs 95 crore by awarding the contract for installing the Timing-Scoring-Result system to Swiss Times Omega at an exorbitant cost of Rs 141 crore. Verma was booked in the case pertaining to the mega-sporting event held.
News on corruption started hitting headlines few weeks before the commencement of games. The organizers were accused for causing loss by awarding contracts at heightened amounts. These charges had cost OC chairperson Kalmadi his membership in Indian National Congress Party and post of president of the Indian Olympic Association.
